Adult protection awareness course

Duration:

  • 1 day

  • 16 participants

Synopsis:

The course will include experiential group work where individuals will be asked to look at their own experience of loss and bereavement as well as their clients.

Video and audio tape materials will be used together with case studies.

Aim and Objectives:

Principle Aim:

  • To increase participants knowledge and understanding in the area of the protection of vulnerable adults and adult abuse, with particular reference to the policies and practice guidance of Greenwich Social Services Department.

Principle objectives:

  • To explore values/attitudes of abuse

  • To explore definitions of vulnerability and adult abuse

  • To identify different categories and signs and symptoms of abuse

  • To provide a resume of current research in this field to highlight key indicators for a high probability of abuse

  • In light with Greenwich policies and practice guidance identify the roles and responsibilities of professionals in this respect

  • To begin to develop strategies for prevention

  • To develop a personal Action plan to promote good practice and improve protection for vulnerable adults within individual work settings

INTRODUCTION

Introduction of VSG to group.  Warm up exercise.  Confidentiality.  The programme for the day with breaks.

WHAT ARE OUR FEARS AND EXPECTATIONS?

What are the difficulties we have in trying to assess and provide intervention for vulnerable we suspect are being abused?

What would we like to achieve today?  In pairs.  Feedback.

10.30 am

WHAT IS VULNERABILITY AND ADULT ABUSE?

Brainstorm. Agree definitions. Categories of abuse. Signs and symptoms of abuse. Exploring values and attitudes of abuse.

ADULT ABUSE - THE FACTS AND THE FIGURES

Review of current research to highlight key indicators relating to adult abuse.

RIGHTS VERSUS RISKS.

What are our civil rights?  In what circumstances may these rights change?  In what circumstances might the rights of a vulnerable person be witheld?  Assessing risk.  If we take away risk we invariably infringe a right.

11.50 am HOW DO WE CURRENTLY ASSESS AND ENDEAVOUR TO PROVIDE INTERVENTION TO VULNERABLE PEOPLE WHO WE SUSPECT MAY BE SUFFERING ABUSE?   Small group discussion and feedback.

THE ROLE OF PROFESSIONALS IN ABUSING THE RIGHTS OF VULNERABLE PEOPLE

Small group exercise to help identify circumstances when professionals may be abusing vulnerable adults.

THE FAMILY CARER AND OTHERS INVOLVED IN THE ABUSE OF VULNERABLE ADULTS- THE ROLE OF PROFESSIONALS

Alerting- Roles and responsibilities. Duty of care. Whistle blowing. Key roles. General procedures and practice guidance for Greenwich.

POSSIBLE ABUSE - CASE STUDIES

An opportunity to explore and discuss examples of abuse - in small discussion groups.  To formulate the criteria which need to be used in order to assess whether or not the vulnerable adult is being abused , with opportunities to outline possible strategies for intervention.

ACTION PLANNING

The development of pratcie guidance for assessing and providing intervention for vulnerable adults who we suspect may be experiencing abuse. Small group work. Small group comprising professionals in similar roles.  Presentations. Discussion.
