Target group:

  • Approved Social Workers and others working in the role of an Appropriate Adult

Aims and Objectives:

Aims:

  • To develop staff skills, knowledge and an understanding of boundaries in relation to this area of work
  • To review the law in relation to the role of approved social workers in relation to the appropriate adult

Objectives:

  • To define the role of an appropriate adult/ nearest relative in the legal framework of the Mental Health Act
  • To develop negotiation skills
  • To give more satisfactory outcome when responding to clients in this role
  • To identify the boundaries for the professional and the volunteer
  • To help staff understand the impact of culture in relation to mental health work in respect of roles of the appropriate adult
  • To formulate good practice in the mental health field when working as an appropriate adults
  • To identify the issues and problems which challenge staff
