Synopsis:
This course will provide an opportunity to identify the major issues for social services staff working with clients in the mental health field. The course will provide an opportunity for participants to clarify their role in enabling and advocating on behalf of clients and in to promoting opportunities for self-advocacy. Participants will also be given the opportunity through small group exercises and working in pairs to practice and enhance their skills in this area.
Aims and Objectives:
The course will provide the opportunity:
- To discuss and identify the issues which exist for the participant in relation to trying to provide advocacy and enabling and empowering client with mental health needs.
- To explore and differentiate best practice in relation to advocacy enabling and those skills required to promote self-advocacy within the context of their professional work.
- To reflect on their practice in relation to both anti-discrimination, anti-racism, civil liberties and also the implications of the human rights act for their practice.
- To work in pairs and in small groups so as to practice and enhance their skills in respect of advocacy and enabling.
