The Human Rights Act

Duration:

  • One day

Target group:

  • All professionals in statutory health & social services and the voluntary sector. This course can be contextualised so as to focus on staff working with particular client groups

Synopsis:

It is extremely important that everyone working in Social Services and the Voluntary Sector are aware the implication of the Human Rights Act for the management and provision of services. Course outline see attached.

Course outline:

To provide an outline of the Human Rights Act. Existing case law will be used to highlight the implications of the Act for public sector organizations, in particular Social Services provision. Opportunities can be provided to understand the implications of the Act for the provision of services to particular client groups using discussion groups, case studies and small group exercises.

Aims and Objectives:

The course will include:

  • An overview of the aims and principles enshrined in the Human Rights Act.
  • The implications of the Act for management and professional practice in the Health and Social Services and in voluntary organizations.
  • The course will highlight the major implications for changes in current practice.
  • Appropriate case studies to highlight the issues identified.
  • The course will not offer legal opinions in any particular case.
  • The aim will be to address the implications of the Act for best practice with particular reference to ensuring anti-discriminatory and anti-racist practice and the maintenance of civil liberties and human rights in relation to service provision.
