Target group:

  • Social workers and other staff working in the community or in day centres with elderly clients

Aims and Objectives:

Aims:

  • To identify issues relating to self neglect in relation to elderly people
  • To raise awareness of the interrelation between self-neglect and depression or dementia
  • To develop assessment and intervention strategies for staff dealing with self-neglecting elderly people

Objectives:

  • To enable staff to identify the range of signs of self neglect
  • To develop strategies to communicate effectively with self neglecting elderly people
  • To identify differences between depression and dementia
  • To develop strategies for risk assessment of suicide
  • To develop an assessment and intervention strategy for elder people who neglect themselves
